One week out, 866 miles from S.F. The last two days been in the doldrums, dull overcast weather. Been raining most of the day. Been in the doldrums too with the machine – almost made myself sick trying to find out where the trouble is, expect it has got a little out of order with not being used. Hope to do better next week. Mr. Mason got his leg badly jammed Tues. 21st. so has been laid up since in consequence. Hopes he will be better in a week or so. Got a pretty good mate, thank goodness, or we should be in a fix, Mr. Mason being the Capt’s right hand man. Saw a ship but too hazy to make her out.
